Cardiac Telerehabilitation
Research Coordinator: Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza

Aim of this research

The Cardiac rehabilitation is a rehabilitation treatment designed for patients undergoing surgical myocardial vascularity through by-pass aorto-coronary or cardiac valve replacement. It consists in an individualized program to educate a person about to live after cardiac surgery, increasing his\her quality of life.

The Cardiac telerehabilitation is a research field whose objective is to develop and validate advanced ICT systems and clinical protocols for delivering remote cardiac rehabilitation treatments (i.e. home-based rehabilitation programs).

The ARTS Lab of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna? (Pisa, Italy) is working actively in the field of cardiac telerehabilitation. We are involved in research projects. Researchers at the ARTS Lab design, develop and validate innovative ICT systems and software algorhitms.

Research activities in this field are carried out in close cooperation with the medical staff at "Auxilium Vitae" Rehabilitation Clinical Centre in the Rehabilitation Bioengineering Laboratory.

According to the ARTS Lab vision, these research acitivities are aimed at developing and validating technological systems to support the clinical staff in the remote assessment and rehabilitation of patients after surgical myocardial vascularity through by- aorto-coronary or cardiac valve replacement, increasing their quality of life (Figure 1 and Figure 2).

Projects

TELEREHABILITATION?from December 2009 to December 2010Telerehabilitation Project is a research project funded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra (Italy) and carried out in collaboration with Rehabilitation Centre "Auxilium Vitae", in Volterra (Italy). The aim of this project was to evaluate technologies and clinical protocols for telerehabilitation and telemonitoring.
TELEREHABILITATION AND ROBOTICS?from December 2010 to December 2012Telerehabilitation and Robotics Project - funded by the Regione Toscana, within Regional Health Research Program 2009 - is focused on the development and validation of robotic systems and biomedical systems based on advanced ICT technologies for telerehabilitation and teleassessment.
