Aim of this research

The Neurological rehabilitation is a rehabilitation treatment designed for patients with subacute and chronic neurological disorders whose motor and/or cognitive functions decreased. It consists in an individualized program aimed at promoting motor and cognitive recovery and improving quality of life.

The Neurological telerehabilitation is a research field whose objective is to develop and validate advanced ICT systems and clinical protocols for delivering remote neurological rehabilitation treatments (i.e. home-based rehabilitation programs).

The main goals of this research field are the following:
1) Telemonitoring of patients in vegetative state;
2) Telerehabilitation of hemiparetic and brain injured patients.

Research activities in this field are carried out in close cooperation with the medical staff at "Auxilium Vitae" Rehabilitation Clinical Centre in the Rehabilitation Bioengineering Laboratory.

According to the ARTS Lab vision, these research activities are aimed at developing and validating technological systems to support the clinical staff in the remote assessment and rehabilitation of patients affected by neurological pathologies (Figure 1).

Projects

TELEREHABILITATION?from December 2009 to December 2010Telerehabilitation Project is a research project funded by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra (Italy) and carried out in collaboration with Rehabilitation Centre "Auxilium Vitae", in Volterra (Italy). The aim of this project was to evaluate technologies and clinical protocols for telerehabilitation and telemonitoring.
TELEREHABILITATION AND ROBOTICS?from December 2010 to December 2012Telerehabilitation and Robotics Project - funded by the Regione Toscana, within Regional Health Research Program 2009 - is focused on the development and validation of robotic systems and biomedical systems based on advanced ICT technologies for telerehabilitation and teleassessment.
TECTUMfrom 2010 to 2013 (36 months)TECTUM (Sviluppo e applicazione di TECnologie per la Televalutazione, la comUnicazione alternativa e l’automazione ambientale di pazienti con disabilità gravi e gravissiMe) project - funded by Fondo Sociale Europeo, Programma Operativo, Regione Toscana - is focused on the development and validation of technologies for 1) teleassessment of subjects in vegetative state and 2) alternative communication and environmental automation for patients affected by severe and very severe disabilities due to traumatic brain injuries and neurodegenerative pathologies
